Culture and History

Kvarner covers the area of the mythical Absytrus islands and has unforgettable rivieras: Opatija, Crikvenica, Vinodol and Rijeka. Due to its protected and attractive geographical position, the Kvarner Bay has from ancient times been an interesting target of numerous conquerors. Already in 1200 BC, an Illyrian tribe of Liburni inhabited the coasts of Kvarner where they traded in amber. The remnants of their forts have been preserved until today. The Greeks, Romans, Eastern Goths, Slavic peoples, Francs, Byzantines, Hungarians, Venetians and Austrians came afterwards. All of them left inerasable traces of their civilizations. There are today in the Kvarner region 276 protected monuments of culture, of which 177 historic units and 161 historic buildings. The interested ones read the history of this region from those monuments and works of art just like from a book.

With its rich tradition and cultural heritage, Kvarner is the starting point of Croatian culture. The oldest written document of the Croatian language originated here – the Baška stone tablet (Baščanska ploča) (from 1100), the oldest text of Croatian common law, from the 13th century, the so-called Vinodolski zakonik. Julije Klović, considered by many the Michelangelo of miniature, originated from this region, here are beautiful small towns, writers that set the path for new trends on the international scene, too…It is exactly in the Kvarner area, in the Mali Lošinj local seas that the statue of Apoxiomen, the Greek athlete from the 4th century B.C. has been recently found. So many different landscapes and worlds, so many interesting stories….

Kvarner has an exceptionally long hospitality tradition dating back to the middle of the 19th century. Thus, for instance, Opatija's tourist tradition began in 1844 and was crowned in March 1884,  by the opening of hotel Kvarner, the first on the eastern coast of the Adriatic. By the end of the 19th century bases were established for tourism in Crikvenica, Novi Vinodolski, Rab, the islands of Lošinj, Krk and Cres and in Gorski kotar. Genuine hospitality developed out of such long tradition, which is reflected in the quality of services provided by generations of tourist operators, rich tourist programmes and a warm welcome.
